Why Penetration Alone May Not Lead to Orgasm

If penetration isn't getting you to orgasm, there is a tempting explanation waiting in every corner of the internet: perhaps you just haven't found the correct angle, person, toy or wildly named position.

Sometimes the more useful explanation is simpler. Penetration may not provide the kind of stimulation you enjoy most.

That is information about your body. It isn't a poor review of your sex life.

Many people with vulvas need clitoral stimulation to orgasm. The clitoris includes external and internal structures, and people's preferred sensations vary. Penetration alone doesn't reliably provide what everyone needs.

Planned Parenthood's orgasm information makes room for that variation. There isn't one correct route that proves you're doing sex properly.

This can be a relief if you've spent time waiting for an experience that everyone else seemed to understand. You haven't failed to discover a compulsory setting.

If you know a particular kind of touch feels good, it is reasonable to include it with a partner. You don't need to abandon a familiar preference because partnered sex is supposed to work differently.

Explain it in useful terms: lighter, steadier, a different location, less change. If a toy is part of what you enjoy, discuss bringing it in. Our guide to talking about toys can help make that an ordinary conversation.

A partner doesn't have to compete with a motor. They can listen, hold something, share the experience or simply be pleased that you're enjoying yourself.

Repeatedly asking whether you're nearly there may be intended as enthusiasm. It can also make the whole thing feel like waiting for a delivery driver who's tracking your progress.

It's fine to say you'd rather not make orgasm the immediate goal. You can enjoy an activity without needing it to produce a particular ending. Changing or stopping doesn't erase the enjoyable parts.

If you're curious about toys, the clitoral stimulator range contains different formats. A product can offer a different sensation; it cannot guarantee an orgasm. Buy for features you're interested in, not a promise to fix you.

If orgasm has become difficult in a new or distressing way, or sex is painful, talk with a qualified health professional. Medicines, health conditions and other factors can play a role. Don't stop prescribed medication on your own.

If penetration simply isn't your favourite way to get there, however, you don't need to spend the evening trying to argue your body into a different opinion.

Give the sensation you actually enjoy a proper place in the room. It's been waiting politely long enough.
