Spooning Sex: Positioning, Support and Comfort

Spooning looks beautifully simple in photographs. Two people. One bed. No visible dispute over whose elbow goes where.

In an actual bedroom, someone is usually moving a pillow while someone else says, "Hang on, that's my hair."

That doesn't mean you're doing it badly. Side-lying intimacy involves fitting two different bodies into a shared space. A little shuffling is part of the deal.

Give the lower arm an escape route

Before anything else, sort out the arm against the mattress. It shouldn't be pinned under a partner or folded into a position you're already regretting. Move it forward, adjust your distance or change sides until both shoulders feel comfortable.

A pillow that works brilliantly for sleeping alone might be too high once you're tucked together. Notice whether your neck feels level or strained. More pillows aren't automatically more helpful. Sometimes removing one is the clever move.

The person behind doesn't need to pull the other person tightly against them. Leave enough room for breathing, moving and saying, "Actually, over here feels better."

Similar direction, different proportions

Height differences can make head-to-head alignment a bit optimistic. Your faces don't have to sit at the same level. Comfort matters more than arranging yourselves like matching teaspoons in a drawer.

Shift the distance between your bodies before assuming you need a completely different position. A small change in where your hips or shoulders rest can alter the whole arrangement. If you're including penetration, only continue where the angle and depth are comfortable for the receiving partner. There is no reason to force a fit.

Spooning also works perfectly well without penetration. That option often gets lost in position guides that act as though every cuddle must submit a business case.

What about a vibrator?

Keep it where the person using it can position it and reach the controls. If one arm is already doing the work of three, hand the toy over or change the setup. Our bullet vibrator explainer covers the format; the bullet range lets you compare actual shapes.

Don't assume a toy described as small will be easy to manage with limited space. A slightly larger grip can be more useful than something that keeps disappearing into the bedding.

The bed is allowed to be comfortable

A cushion between the knees may suit some people. Others prefer their legs arranged differently. There isn't one correct picture you need to recreate, and a position should never require tolerating tingling, numbness or pain.

If the cuddly arrangement becomes too warm, separate a little. If someone wants to turn around, turn around. Affection doesn't evaporate because you need to release a trapped shoulder.

The nicest thing about spooning is the lack of ceremony. You can settle, chat, laugh at the logistics and find out what suits you both. Start with the elbow. It has suffered enough.
