Soft Penis? The Sex Doesn't Have to Stop
Share
You're kissing, the clothes have come off, and everything's going beautifully. Then an erection changes, and suddenly the room has the atmosphere of a cancelled flight. Nobody knows what to say. Someone starts apologising.
That moment doesn't have to be the end of sex. A soft penis can still feel a hell of a lot, and being turned on doesn't always produce a firm erection. There are plenty of ways to keep enjoying each other, if you both want to.
The first useful move is letting the person attached to the penis have a say. They may want a different kind of touch, a pause or a cuddle. None of those needs a dramatic bloody announcement.
Ask what they want, not what went wrong
"Want to keep kissing?" gives somebody an easy choice. So does "Can I keep my mouth on you?" Repeatedly asking if they still find you attractive hands them an emotional problem to solve while they're already feeling self-conscious.
An erection isn't a reliable report on desire. Stress, alcohol, medicines and physical health can all affect erections, and you won't identify the cause by staring harder. If it's your erection that's changed, you can say what you'd like: "Keep going, that feels great," or "Get on my face instead."
You might both still be horny. You might want a different evening. Find out, rather than filling the silence with your worst guesses.
Keep the pleasure, change the plan
Kissing, hands, mouths and toys are all still there, and none of them needs a hard-on. Fingers and tongues never go soft, and the person with the vulva may find the evening has just improved considerably. This doesn't have to be the consolation round. For plenty of people, it's the main event.
A soft penis can still love being touched, and some people find it's extra sensitive. Taking the whole thing in your mouth while it's soft is a very different feeling, and a lot of people adore it. Ask about sensation and comfort, because the same grip and speed may not feel the same now. And the rest of the body hasn't gone anywhere: nipples, neck, balls, inner thighs.
Our non-penetrative sex guide has plenty of other ideas. What matters is giving those things your full attention, instead of doing them while secretly checking on the erection.
A toy can join in without fixing anyone
If you both feel like vibration, bring it in because you want the vibration. A toy doesn't need to arrive carrying the weight of rescuing the whole evening.
A small finger vibe is ideal here, because it goes wherever your hand goes. The Satisfyer Perfect Pair 1 works as a finger vibrator with 12 programs, and it's perfect on a low setting along the underside of a soft cock, over the balls or on the clit of whoever's next to you. It feels good, it's fun, and it's got nothing to do with what's going on with anybody's erection.

You can use it together, take turns or let your partner show you what they like. Our guide to mutual masturbation is a great next read if sharing that attention sounds good.
There's no need to panic-buy a pump or a ring on the spot. Shopping for equipment while you're convinced you need repairing is a pretty shit shopping experience. Pleasure and treatment are different jobs, so choose the right help for the one you're after.
Don't keep checking whether they're hard again
Imagine trying to relax while somebody keeps looking down to see whether you're improving. Even well-meant encouragement can start to feel like an inspection.
If you've agreed to enjoy something else, then that's what you're doing. Kiss because you like kissing. Use the toy because it feels good. An erection coming back can be very welcome without being the only acceptable outcome.
The same goes for orgasm. You can come without a firm erection, and many people do, and it can feel fantastic. It doesn't have to become the new target. Our guide to taking the pressure off orgasm covers that particular trap.
If it keeps happening, see your GP
Occasional changes are normal. If difficulty getting or keeping an erection continues, is a new concern or is bothering you, book a GP appointment. There can be physical or psychological causes, and the right treatment depends on what's going on.
You don't have to wait until your sex life feels miserable to ask. You also don't have to diagnose yourself from the most alarming search result at two in the morning.
Getting help and continuing to have a great time can happen side by side. The appointment's for your health. It isn't a notice that you've been temporarily disqualified from being sexy.
You can also stop and still want each other
Sometimes a change of plan is exactly right. Sometimes someone's frustrated and would rather put their pants on. Let that answer stand, without making them perform cheerfulness as well.
A good response can be as simple as staying affectionate and getting on with the evening. Nobody needs to promise a spectacular comeback tomorrow.
Your sex life has room for more than one kind of good night. An erection gets a say in what your penis can do. It doesn't get to decide whether the two of you are allowed to enjoy each other.
